About us

My name is Mike and I am the owner and operator of El Portón Verde, a small bed and breakfast eco-lodge in the hills outside of Managua, Nicaragua. Thanks for checking in with us, we do appreciate it.

First of all, if you would like to communicate with us, please use our form located on the Contact Us page.

The rest of the family

Our puppy Lady Gigi. She is in charge of playing with our visitors and especially loves children.

This is our “big dog” whose name is Odie. He is in charge of security every night.

When I moved back to Nicaragua after a few years of living in Newport Beach, California, I experienced something interesting each time we had a new visitor come and see the farm.  Whether friends, family, or simply the guy from the telephone company, they would enter our gate, walk into the house, and when they came to the south side of the house they would see our view and have a reaction like “Wow, what a tremendous view, how beautiful!”

I eventually decided that we should try to share this unique location and setting of our farm, and took on the challenge of converting the residence into a functioning bed and breakfast that would offer a great atmosphere, top-notch personalized service, mini-resort-type of facilities, and good value for the traveler’s dollar, peso, euro, cordoba, or what have you. We invite you to come and see for yourself if we have been successful in that endeavor.

Mike is a professional eLearning instructional technologist, performance consultant, and in general, someone who helps people leverage technologies to improve learning, performance, and knowledge transfer throughout their organization. If that doesn’t mean anything to you don’t worry. I know about training, computers, databases, and how to put it all together with people so that they can learn and master new skills and such things. While I am still doing that work on a project basis (i.e. independent consultant), I have now added innkeeper to the mix.

I am looking forward to the challenges and am committed to helping people discover their own Nicaragua. I hope we can make that happen for you, or at least get you started.

  2. How much does it cost to stay at El Porton Verde? Also, can you arrange the day tours mentioned on your site? on said:

El Porton Verde was mentioned in Nicaliving.com

    • Greetings and thanks for checking in from nicaliving.com!

We have three options for people depending on your budget and how long you plan on staying with us. The most economical go from $15 a night per person in our bunk bed rooms that share a bathroom. The handicap accessible room (mid-range) is $20/person double occupancy but is not on the same level as the swimming pool. The “expensive” haha room is actually a fully-furnished apartment with living area and kitchen for $30/pp dbl occ. All of these include a hearty breakfast.

Yes we can arrange the day tours mentioned. I don’t have exact costs yet though. Again, depends on how many are in your party, etc.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

  3. Hello,Looking for an individual or conapmy that can help me get through the red-tape of retiring in Lef3n or San Juan del Sur (maybe Granada).Would need help in finding apartment, visas, banking, etc. the whole nine yards. Might be bringing my two cats, too.Could come down in Feb/March to get things started and return, for good, May/June.Quite serious about this, looking for help and not getting ripped off. Thanks!PS: I’m toying with idea of driving down (from NEast) any sugestions?

    • Greetings Igor: Per your question, yes helping people to relocate to Nicaragua is what we do. We have helped a few people to get their residency, bring their things down here, etc. If you do drive down, best you hook up with a caravan (i.e. someone else coming down too) so that you have some strength in numbers if you understand me. Email us at info(at sign)elportonverde.com and we can talk about some more specifics of what you are looking to accomplish. Cheers and thanks for checking in with us!
