Casa Ayers is located in the beach town of Masachapa/Pochomil and offers easy access via paved roads; it is an easy one-hour drive from the Nicaraguan capital of Managua and the international airport.

This home offers good value for your hard-earned vacation dollar. Both bedrooms are air conditioned, there is a nice palm-thatched rancho structure that affords a fresh breeze and sunset views. Imagine yourself in your chaise lounge with a cool drink enjoying a lovely tropical sunset every night of your stay!

The Space

True beachfront, with modern amenities and a great airy rancho with awesome sunset views. Whether on a romantic getaway or a fun family vacation, the sounds of the Pacific surf will lull you to sleep and the sunset views from the upstairs Rancho will provide many hours of relaxation and enjoyment.

Guest Access

Whole house, rancho, beach. Onsite secured parking. Interaction with Guests Mike @ Farmstay El Porton Verde will normally be the one to take you from either the MGA International airport, or from our other listing, Farmstay El Porton Verde, Managua, so we can get to know one another and have a chance to pick up groceries and change money when in Managua. I’ll show you how everything works, introduce you to the onsite 24 hour caretakers/security, and in general make sure you are oriented on what you need to know to have an enjoyable vacation.

The Neighborhood

Casa Ayers is located within walking distance of local restaurants, discos, and bars. A variety of types of food offerings are available, including pizza, seafood, Nicaraguan and international cuisine. Both swimming and surfing beaches are nearby. Just to the north of Casa Ayers is a channel naturally cut into the reef affording a safe sandy swimming area suitable for children and toddlers during the lower tides. Just south is the surfing beach of Pochomil Viejo. Nearby are several other attractive destinations. In the early mornings, you can walk up the beach to the fishing village of Masachapa to meet the fisherman as they come into the beach with the day’s fresh catch. A local public market, supermarket and other amenities are on offer at the nearby town of San Rafael del Sur and right in the village are basic stores offering groceries, clothing, etc. For $2 per person, the taxi will take you into town. The Barcelo Montelimar resort is also located nearby, where there is a gaming casino and all-you-can-eat and drink restaurant.

Getting Around

Buses run daily every half-hour to both the nearby town of San Rafael del Sur (banks, grocery stores, etc.) and to the capital city of Managua. There are taxis and bicycle taxis to take you to bars, restaurants and discotheques. Other Things to Note Casa Ayers is located one hour away from the capital city of Managua, where the international airport is located. Transport via bus, private shuttle, or taxi is readily available. For those arriving at the Managua (MGA) airport late or departing extra early, see my other listings for Farmstay El Portón Verde, Managua, where we offer our famous “soft landing” service, which is specially designed to take the hassle out of the arrival process and is great for first-time visitors to Nicaragua. We can provide transportation between the airport, Farmstay and/or Casa Ayers. Also local tours can be arranged to visit volcanoes, Colonial towns, lakes, and artisan’s markets.

House Rules

Have a great time! Be respectful that this is a vacation home for the owner, so try not to break things 🙂 We have pets onsite, so your pets are best left back home. Outdoor smoking is okay. Security There is 24 hour onsite security and the property is fenced. You’ll have the keys and it’s perfectly safe to go walking in the area.

Your first and best contact in Nicaragua-Package Deals, MGA pickup

“Soft Landing” Service

In reviewing what we do well here at El Porton Verde and where we perhaps could do better, one thing I’m certain of on the positive side is that we perform a very good service to first-time visitors to Nicaragua. In that light, this post is touting EPV as “your first and best contact” and that we do ” Nicaragua Package Deals” and “MGA pickup.”

Nicaragua Package Deals

Let’s talk about the Nicaragua package deals for example. We call them the “surf and turf” specials. I can get you into a house right on the beach, airport transport, take you to a supermarket, get your dollars changed into cordobas, then come and pick you up after the five (or more…) days is over, and provide that first and/or last night lodging if you get in really late or depart really early. This package deal for Salinas Grandes property EPV manages is a super great deal at less than $500! The Pochomil property is a bit more at less than $700.

For the very independent traveler that is confident in your ability to get around in Nicaragua (for example, taking public buses around the country instead of pricey private shuttles services) it’s true you might prefer to travel that way. If it’s your first time in-country, and aren’t real strong with your Spanish language skills, then it might be worth your while to stay with us. Make sense? Buying a surfboard

I will be doing a 2 month workaway, one month in Nicaragua and then a month in Costa Rica, so I decided it will be cheaper to buy a surfboard rather than renting (as I will be living in San Juan De Sol and then going to Pavones and plan of surfing most days).

I have read some people posting saying about how its hard to find boards in Nicaragua, but everything I read hasn’t told me how to get one.

Does anyone know surf shops around the area I can contact to buy a used one or know of a website I could find them from?

Please and thanks!

1. Re: Buying a surfboard
Greetings Aly:

The most obvious thing would be that there are several surf shops in SJd SUR where you can find a board to buy.

Not sure if this would exactly work out, but another idea is to put an ad in the local craigslist advertising what type of board you are looking at and what you might pay and hope someone sees it onhttp://managua.craigslist.org/ a couple of days before you get here to try to sync up with someone leaving the country who would rather have a couple hundred bucks than have to pay to get the board back home with them.

Good luck out there Aly…

Cheers, Mike @ Farmstay El Portón Verde, Managua

We have had the fortunate experience of having a string of European visitors to the Farmstay, and it got me to thinking that this may be a great market segment for us. First we had three different single female travelers stay with us for two nights each, from Germany, Holland, and then Germany again. Then we had two couples stay two nights with us who were from England and Holland.

So it got me to thinking that the European visitor to Nicaragua has traveled about 24 hours to get here, and they are very happy to have our famous “soft landing service” where we pick the visitors up at the airport, bring them to the Farmstay, they stay a couple of nights, getting some much-needed rest, and sometimes they feel like an afternoon or night tour of Masaya or the Masaya Volcano is something they would like to do too. All easily accomplished at our excellent location where it is so tranquil, calm, and peaceful that one can really rest here, but we are only fifteen minutes to the Masaya Volcano National Park, so a quick tour to the most-frequented tourist destination is super-easy to accomplish.

If anyone has any tips to share about how to attract more of these wonderful visitors, please comment here or send me a message.

Medical Tourism Nicaragua: Quality work can pay for your tropical beach vacation!

Medical Tourism Nicaragua

Looking to get some medical work done, save a ton of money, and pay for a great Nicaraguan vacation?Hospital Metropolitano

Due to its world-class, high-quality hospitals with regional accreditation and low cost, many searchers for medical tourism services choose to visit Nicaragua as their destination of choice. For some, that means staying before and after your surgery or other treatment/procedure in the Managua area.

medicaltourism

But most people do not come to Nicaragua to stay at a chain hotel similar to what you have in your hometown. You would prefer to stay in the best-TripAdvisor rated lodging in Managua that has a true Nicaraguan flavor with first-world comforts and customer service.

Farmstay El Porton Verde is a small bed and breakfast located five minutes drive from Hospital Metropolitano Las Pellas, the best-run and most modern hospital in the country. The Farmstay is nested in the breezy hills south of Managua approx. 2 km off of kilometer 10.5 of the Road to Masaya (Carretera a Masaya). With our outstanding views, four-star quality guest rooms, and gorgeous swimming pool, we offer a quiet and fresh alternative to the airport- and downtown-area chain hotels and small inns. Our motto is: “we are located in Managua, but being here feels like a world away…” but the only way to really appreciate it is to be here for yourself. We invite you to visit and stay with us at the farm.

Your host Mike, in addition to welcoming you with personalized service and attention to detail that the most discerning travelers can appreciate, can help you arrange a wide range of health care services, from elective cosmetic surgery to a much-needed hip or knee replacement. (Basically any treatment or surgery done in Nicaragua costs nor more then 1/3 the price of what it would cost back home!)

As an example, the Farmstay recently received a visitor who is living in Costa Rica and he saved over $3,000 in his gall bladder removal compared to the price he would have paid in the neighboring Central American country! And he was thrilled by the quality of care, the concierge service, and the English-speaking doctors and other health professionals with whom he was in contact.

For those a bit nervous due to this being your first visit to Nicaragua, much less a visit to a foreign hospital, we hope to help you have a relaxing stay here in Nicaragua from the moment you leave the customs area at MGA airport to the moment you pass through security on your way back home. For those first-time visitors, here is a link to my blog about What’s the drill? What to expect when arriving at MGA Managua’s Augusto Sandino International Airport

We work and live on a small (eight acre) organic permaculture farm located in the breezy hills south of Managua, overlooking Ticuantepe and Masaya, Nicaragua. We enjoy the views, peace and tranquility here so much, we decided to share it with a select group of travelers…if are you one of those who want a unique Nicaraguan vibe from your first to your last night in-country, then we are the right place for you!

As part of the medical lodging and transportation services we offer, we can take you to and from doctor’s visits, tests, and consultations, surgeries, treatments, physical therapy, etc. As needed, on-site aftercare by nurses or other health professionals can be arranged.

You will not be ‘roughing it’ at El Porton Verde, far from it, as the property has excellent amenities usually found in four star hotels such as custom-made furniture, quality beds, bedding and towels. We also have a swimming pool, free high speed WiFi, and delicious Nicaraguan breakfasts that typically include ingredients grown and raised here on the farm.

Airport pickup and drop off service is available. We give you the “soft landing” treatment from the moment you pass through Customs at the airport until you go home. Your best bet to be near Managua but not “in” Managua!

Your best bet to be near Managua but not “in” Managua!.

While the great majority of visitors to Nicaragua are intent on getting out to the Corn Islands, San Juan del Sur, Ometepe Island, Granada or Leon (among other great spots…) as soon as they land at Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA), due to flight schedules, a good amount of tourists will need to look for lodging that first night in a place closer to the capital city of Managua.

But Managua has a bad reputation, and although it is much better then it used to be, visually as well as attractions-wise, it still isn’t the first place that people think of when they think of their Nicaragua vacation destination. So, for visitors who are getting in late (or visitors whose flights depart early), we at Farmstay El Porton Verde offer a good alternative. You do not have to stay in a chain hotel downtown or across from the airport!

You can stay at a very tranquil and peaceful location with fabulous views of volcanoes and forested hills, on a working farm at an elevation of 1,000 feet above sea level, where it is cooler and there is almost always a pleasant breeze.

That’s what is behind the concept of being near Managua, but not “in” Managua. I’d be interested to hear your comments or questions below.
