Experiences at Nekupe are rooted in an active-outdoor lifestyle ideal for multi-generational families, groups of friends or adventurous retreats that include exploration, hiking, tennis, horseback riding, sporting clay and target shooting, and more. These activities are complemented by opportunities for thoughtful inner reflection through mountain-top yoga overlooking majestic views of Mombacho Volcano, outdoor spa treatments utilizing native ingredients, meditation and nature walks.

Nekupe was conceived as a private family retreat by Nicaraguan philanthropists Don Alfredo Pellas and Doña Theresita Pellas, avid travelers and adventure enthusiasts whose commitment to nature is exhibited through the resort’s core principle of respect for the environment. They created a sanctuary, reforesting more than 14,000 trees, building water reservoirs, and nurturing local wildlife, with the desire of cultivating a destination where guests may enjoy shared experiences in a meaningful way.

“Nekupe, which means ‘heaven’ in Chorotega – the indigenous language of a native tribe in Nicaragua, has been a true passion to bring to life, driven by the love for our country, its breathtakingly raw beauty, cultural heritage and kind people,” said Don Alfredo Pellas. “We are excited to see Nekupe and Nicaragua evolve into destinations where guests will reconnect with nature and each other through relaxing and invigorating experiences.”

  • Accommodations – Guests may buy out the entire eight-room resort or book any of the following accommodations individually. Each room comes with a luxury ATV to navigate the miles of natural terrain.
    • La Residencia de Doña Theresita – Perched atop a hill to allow for views across the reserve and out to Mombacho Volcano is the 24,000-square-foot main residential compound, La Residencia de Doña Theresita. The residence houses two grand suites, each measuring 1,300 square feet, which overlook a 1,900-square-foot deck that includes an infinity plunge pool with grand vistas of the deep forest. It also houses two standard 870-square-foot suites, a full kitchen and recreational pool.
    • Villas – Four standalone villas that range from 700-1,000 square feet, each with an open terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows, are nestled along the countryside offering guests an immersive indoor/outdoor experience. Guests will enjoy access to the neighboring dry river outlined with giant bromeliads and impressive rock fountains.
  • Central Lobby – Nekupe’s central lobby, Casa Club, is a communal space with airy living and lounge options to enjoy a cocktail or convene to coordinate the day’s activities. The 10,800-square-foot lounge also houses the resort’s restaurant, Don Alfredo’s, a gift shop and pool court where guests may take in panoramic views of the Nicaraguan landscape, including a stunning view of Nicaragua’s majestic Mombacho Volcano.
  • Outdoor Pursuits – Nekupe’s incomparable setting is highlighted by its roster of extraordinary outdoor experiences taking advantage of the varied terrain full of trails, manmade nature pools and babbling creeks. A designated Ranger Center will guide guests through on- and off-site activities including:
    • On-site: Horseback riding, sporting clay and target shooting, ropes course, fully equipped fitness center, tennis, butterfly and birdwatching, stargazing, marimba classes, swimming in the recreational pool and folkloric dance lessons.
    • Off-site: Day tours to Granada and the Islets, volcano hiking and sandboarding, surfing, golfing, cultural tours and coffee plantation tours.
  • Culinary Offerings – Guests will enjoy traditional Nicaraguan dishes with a modern interpretation using a bounty of native ingredients, inspired by Doña Theresita’s own cooking and sourced from the on-site garden and local purveyor. For those in search of more bespoke menu items, the resort’s chef may customize any meal to suit culinary needs. An outdoor chef’s table and exhibition kitchen serves as the backdrop for cooking classes and bespoke dinners. Hand-crafted cocktails and cigar and rum tastings complement the culinary delights.
  • Wellness – A sanctuary for the soul, Nekupe’s peaceful and intimate reserve serves as a restorative destination that invites guests to benefit from the area’s healing energy and attributes. Travelers are invited to embrace the calm and inner peace afforded by this natural countryside oasis through meditative practices on the resort’s expansive yoga deck that overlooks the rolling reserve out to Concepción and Maderas Volcanos.
  • Chapel – Perched atop one of the highest points in the nature reserve and surrounded by trees that bloom the fragrant sacuanjoche flower, lies the resort’s Chapel San Francisco de Asis. With stone walls and wooden trim, the stately venue immediately impresses with its simple, yet elegant nature; thoughtful design, including an Italian bell customized for Don Alfredo and Doña Theresita; and breathtaking fountain that streams water to the baptistery. Whether guests opt for a leisure stroll or ride up the hill, they will take solace in the calming energy of the journey. The chapel is available for guests to meditate and use as a venue for intimate weddings and events.
  • Spa – A cornerstone of the resort, Nekupe Spa gives more than a nod to its inspired location set amidst lush vegetation. Embracing all energy points of the property, select native-based treatments utilizing natural ingredients will be available in the Casa Club and designated meadows within the reserve starting November 2016. The spa’s full concept will debut in 2017. Guests will enjoy views of the sprawling locale and hear nature’s meditative soundtrack while experiencing restorative treatments created to nourish and restore in this unspoiled setting.

Nekupe, an hour-and-a-half drive from Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport, will offer rates beginning at $750 per night. Rates include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks; non-alcoholic beverages; one ATV per accommodation; and select activities on property. For reservations and additional information, visit www.nekupe.com.

Nicaragua’s Nekupe Sporting Resort and Retreat Offers a Mountain of Amenities | Luxury Travel

The vision of owners Don Alfredo Pellas Jr. and Doña Theresita Pellas, the luxurious layout was designed by architect Iside Sarmiento, who planned each structural element’s location for optimal flow and minimal impact. Guests residing in one of the four 1,100-square-foot standalone villas will be treated to a pampered perspective of the dormant Mombacho Volcano (which last erupted in 1570) through floor-to-ceiling windows and open terraces. Each is also equipped with a separate bedroom and living area (with a flat-screen television) and a bathroom with a soaking tub, a shower, and Annick Goutal bath amenities. Rounding out the room count is La Gran Residencia which houses two 1,300-square-foot grand suites with outdoor showers and indoor bathing tubs, as well as two 870-square-foot suites with high ceilings and endless views. Each villa and suite comes with its own all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for personal transportation.

Serving as a social center, the Casa Club features a cocktail lounge, a swimming pool, and a farm-to-table restaurant serving neo-Nicaraguan cuisine prepared by Doña Theresita Pellas herself. And when it comes to nourishing a healthy balance between mind and body, the spa and wellness facility offers treatments grounded in local ingredients.

But while staying inside may be tempting, the truly exclusive experiences await in exploration of the verdant surroundings, whether by horseback riding, mountain biking, or hiking. Those with their sights set on even more action can avail themselves of the on-site sporting clay and target shooting range, ropes course, and tennis court. Also on hand are immersive cultural offerings such as Marimba and Folkloric dance classes, culinary classes, and spirited rum tastings. And if wanderlust is still not sated, day trips can be organized for oceanfront golf at Guacalito de la Isla (an 18-hole course designed by David McLay Kidd), sport fishing excursions, or surfing—all accessible within about an hour drive.

The all-inclusive pricing (save for spa services, target shooting, and premium liquor) starts at $900. With all on offer, Nekupe, which means “heaven” in the tongue of the indigenous Chorotega tribe, is sure to live up to its name. (nekupe.com)

Another data point for those of you with “five-star” tastes in luxury accommodations! A new partnership has been formed that starts with what we have known as Aqua Wellness Resort, gives it a new name and with new capital, presumably they will work on this announced plan to have a bit of a luxury spa and resort circuit here in Nicaragua.

My comments on the page linked-to above is basically that at least they are having their guests see a few different spots in Nicaragua. They’ll have a bit more of a chance to partake in the cultural aspects of Nicaragua. This aspect of Nicaraguan travel is, for me at least, a big difference-maker in the experience of the visitors from other countries in the region, and that’s a good thing!

How to Vacation Like a Millionaire-Carlos Pellas' Mukul Resort

How to Vacation Like a Millionaire-Carlos Pellas’ Mukul Resort

Avid angler Carlos Pellas, a Nicaraguan industrialist, philanthropist and the nation’s second richest man, saw stunning Guacalito de la Isla from his fishing boat, and just had to have it. He built Mukul, a luxury boutique resort with individual plush casitas, an off-the-charts spa, an instantly famous and photogenic golf course by David Kidd, and world-class surf breaks right off the beach. The unrivalled combination of great golf, surfing and lodging has drawn surf-loving pro golfers like world number two Adam Scott and US Open Champ Geoff Ogilvy.

They say the rich are different from everyone else, but that’s not completely true. They have hobbies, enjoy vacations, and are passionate about many different things, from conservation to golf to food, just like other people. The difference is that they do it at a much different level, pulling out all the stops to make these experiences the best possible. The good news is that in many cases, some of the richest individuals in the world are eager to share the way they enjoy their travel, hobbies and passions with others, people they don’t even know. More often than not, this means turning their personal dreams into personalized dream resorts, destinations where they can showcase the things they love to vacation travelers. Since the rich have diverse interests, this offers many different attractive travel options, all around the world.

In this case, the richest man in Nicaragua and one-and-only billionaire, Carlos Pellas (don’t worry Presidente Daniel Ortega, you’ll get there soon!) has created the wonderful Mukul resort in Guacalito de la Isla, an exclusive enclave located in the Tola, Rivas area of southwestern Nicaragua. Located approximately 2 1/2 hours from the Farmstay, Mukul offers the only true five-star resort and spa setup in the, country. You get your own oceanfront casita, have people there to attend to your every whim, and have the whole spa package available.

This short write-up from Forbes magazine also focuses in on the golf course and surfing opportunities on-site. I don’t know about the golfing, but the surfing can be very good on the southern point of the cove on which the resort is located. I have a friend in the States whose lady loves the luxury resorts and we have a sort of a teasing name for her, “Five-Star” and I think that Mukul would suit Five-Star very well indeed.

My comments:

Well, of course that is sort of the thing with “luxury hotels” which is where this story focuses. They seem to be run for wealthy clientele who don’t wish to see the poverty, corruption, etc. (To the commentors on the linked-to page) Would that be a surprise for you?

I can tell you that if you come down for a visit (and why don’t you want to see for yourself?) you will find that this country is very beautiful and the culture quite vividly real. If you want luaus, all-inclusive resorts, and mass consumerist experiences, you probably should not come to Nicaragua. It is a real place with good and bad.

My rec: Best to get the “soft landing” treatment when you are picked up at the airport, taken to your lodging, and helped along with the rest of your trip from there…and if you don’t forget “todo es una aventura” then you’ll be fine.

1. Mukul Resort & Spa, Nicaragua

Everything you see could be yours. For a week or two.Opened: February 2013

Part of Guacalito de la Isla, a 676-hectare, eco-sensitive resort on four miles of untouched Pacific coast, Mukul has only been open a few days as of this posting, but is already a benchmark for luxury in Nicaragua.

The brainchild of entrepreneur Carlos Pellas, the retreat takes its design cues from local culture: villas and bohio-styled huts crafted from native teak and pine are distinguished by an ancient Mayan numerical system, reclaimed rum barrels are used in headboards and the Pellas’ family rum is the nightcap of choice.

Book the six-bedroom Casona Don Carlos, Pellas’ private beach residence, and you’ll also enjoy a pool and oceanfront living area.

Spa treatments offered in themed suites include a crystal temple, rainforest room and hammam using a bounty of local ingredients: raw cane sugar crystals, seaweed and Nicaraguan volcanic clay.

There are plenty of more active diversions, such as golf on an oceanfront course — its 18 holes were chiseled without cutting down a single tree.

The impressive publicity and buzz factor for the new Mukul resort owned by the Pellas family of Nicaragua is continuing yet again with this number one position in a CNN Travel story. Congratulations!

Rivas, Nicaragua

On a recent Tuesday morning, three of the U.S.’s most influential travel agents were hiking on a cliff-side trail overlooking the Pacific Ocean, gazing at the pristine beaches below and watching a group of howler monkeys in a nearby tree. Leading them were executives of Mukul, a not-quite-open 37-room $40 million luxury resort. The scenic tour was just the beginning salvo in a three-night, all-expenses-paid trip organized by the hotel to convince the travel agents to promote the property to their wealthy clients.

Nicaragua Seeks Luxury Travelers

Andrew Kaufman for The Wall Street Journal

A day bed on Manzanillo Beach at Mukul, a new $40 million resort in Nicaragua.

With its 24-hour butler service, lavish spa and a golf course created by the celebrated Scottish designer David McLay Kidd, it would seem an easy sell. But there is one complication. The resort is in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the hemisphere, one with a war-torn history—and a place where none of the agents had ever sent a client, or been themselves.

The Wall Street Journal is now on-board with the launch of Mukul, it would appear. The video embedded on the linked page has an interesting discussion about how the high-end travel agents and other jet-setter confidantes will need to do some convincing of their clients in order to have them travel to a country like Nicaragua. Also interesting and not news to those living in Nicaragua, Mukul had to establish a training program that started from the basics to train the staff on things like what bidets are, how to pour coffee, make a bed, communicate with the guests, etc. Good stuff for those interested in following this new resort that is launching right now.

Mukul, Nicaragua’s First Luxury Boutique Hotel and Spa, to Open in 2013 | Luxury Travel Advisor

Mukul, Nicaragua’s First Luxury Boutique Hotel and Spa, to Open in 2013 | Luxury Travel Advisor.

Mukul, a luxury boutique hotel and spa in Guacalito de la Isla, a new $250-million, 1,670-acre private beach community on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast, is scheduled to open in January 2013.

Mukul – which is the Mayan word for “secret” – will feature 37 accommodations, each with an ocean view, pool and private staff. Other resort amenities include Spa Mukul, with six private spa-treatment casitas; a beach club featuring dining and lounge areas and a swimming pool; and the 18-hole Guacalito Golf Course.

On offer are access to the property’s four miles of beach and coastline, and five kilometers of nature trails for hiking or biking, or observing the four species of monkeys and other wildlife that reside in the coastal forest. There are similarly customized experiences.

Mukul and Guacalito de la Isla are the vision of Nicaraguan entrepreneur Don Carlos Pellas, whose family has roots in the country that date back to the 19th century. The Pellas family businesses include transportation, computers, sugar, ethanol, Flor de Caña Rum and the Vivian Pellas Hospital. Pellas also founded the BAC Credomatic financial network in 1985.

The property’s designers included Jeff Jensen, principal designer at HKS Hill Glazier Architects, who collaborated with Frank Butler and Song Chia of FAB Studio; SWA Landscape Architects; and Paul Duesing Partners Interior Designers. Their resort projects include Las Ventanas al Paraiso and Palmilla One & Only Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, and Rosewood Mayakoba and Tucker’s Point Club in Bermuda. The Guacalito Golf Course was designed by David McLay Kidd. The concept and treatments at Spa Mukul were created by Angel Vezina Stewart, founding spa director at the Spa at Las Ventanas al Paraiso.

I’m still waiting for my invite to come by and peruse the offering at Mukul, which is set to open in January.  Maybe a wealthy friend will visit and insist that I accompany them there during their visit! All kidding aside, this is set to be the best beach spa in Nicaragua, hands down!

UPDATE: I mentioned sort of as a joke on our Facebook page that I had not received the invite to come and check out this lovely boutique spa hotel, and wouldn’t you know, Guacalito de la Isla put a comment there with a contact for me to arrange a visit!  How cool is that?
