“Very helpful hosts”

Reviewed yesterday NEW

We stayed at El Porton Verde for more than a week. Mike and the rest of his family were the best hosts that anyone can imagine. They were very helpful in every way. For instance they went with us to the police station (we had been robbed before we went to El Porton Verde) and helped us with translation, they let us use their private computer for hours and hours, they made us delicious food, they gave us good tips on what to do in the Managua area, they drove us to the bus station, etc.. The place in itself is beautiful and peaceful, with fruit trees and pool. It is a perfect amount of guests there, so that you can have nice conversations with Mike and his family as well as the other guests, but it’s totally silent during the night. In addition to all this, the rooms are very nice and the wifi is stable and strong. Mike also gave us a better deal since we stayed there so long. This was the best place we’ve ever stayed!

We're Number One!

We’re Number One!

Well, another great review in the books! We had a long-term guest named Jeff who was doing some work in teaching here in Nicaragua during the weekdays. On the weekends he went to various locales to check out the sites. One weekend he went to Ometepe and met this couple from Norway who are students in the USA. Well, he passed them our information and recommended them to stay with us when in Managua.

Unfortunately for them, they booked a cheap hostel in the downtown Managua area instead of making a reservation with us at the Farmstay. When arriving on the last bus from Leon, they decided to walk the few blocks to their hostel instead of hiring a taxi for a couple of dollars to take them there safely.

Since it was nighttime and they were not paying very much attention to their surroundings, a motorcycle came up to them and grabbed her purse which unfortunately held their passports and student visas. No one was hurt, thank goodness, but I’m sure it was scary for these two young people.

We got the call then, since they literally had no one else on whom they could rely upon to help them in their situation. The couple ended up having to stay with us for about one week to get their emergency passports and visas arranged. We even went to the police station with them so that they could make a statement and report the crime, helping translate and to ensure that the police did their part of the job.

Now that’s what I call customer service! Here are some other great reviews if you would like to peruse them…TripAdvisor Review 1, TripAdvisor Review 2, TripAdvisor Review 3, etc. etc.

Mike was on the ball, meeting us at the airport, helping us shop on the way to his ‘oasis’ at El Porton Verde. We stayed in the apartment just outside the swimming pool, with a grand view of the verdant hills and volcanic region. Restful, indeed, and Mike took us on a fine tour of Managua, and bid us good bye by driving us to our next adventure in Granada. Wifi and tasty breakfast included. But mostly, just breathe the Nica atmosphere.

Incredible Service and Stay – Review of Farmstay El Porton Verde, Managua, Nicaragua – TripAdvisor

“Incredible Service and Stay”

Mike, the US American owner starts out and continues to treat his guests like favored friends. He met us at the airport without a hassle and then kindly took us to a supermarket to put in some supplies into the apartment of his that we are renting. He didn’t just drop us off, but went in with us to help orient us to the layout of the store.

The apartment was excellent with a bedroom, bath and separate kitchen. We could have walked his farm, but the pool was right outside our door. We became pool slugs for most of our time there. Mike arranged for his cook to prepare our dinners too for a fee so low, we couldn’t have eaten out for that amount. Each night, it was abundant and delicious. Breakfast, which was included in the rental, was just as good.

For an additional fee, Mike toured us around Managua and let us loose to see the museum, but after collecting us, took us to a park we would not have discovered on our own. We tried some Nicaraguan treats we would not have known about otherwise.

We had a great time. The apartment is an excellent value. The views are beautiful.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms, but the apartment is really comfortable for a couple to spread out.

“Making Managua easy”

We arrived at the end of the day at Managua airport. As arranged for Mike meet us there. We rented a car and followed Mike back to his place. Flawless. Mike mentioned relatives had been over that day and generously made us dinner. We went to bed early and slept well. Breakfast was plentiful and an excellent start to the day. Mike accompanied and guided us Pricesmart where we stocked up for our stay at the beach. We dropped Mike where he wanted and headed off.

Staying at El Porton Verde was one of the smartest things we did on this trip. It made our arrival easy, stress-free and a pleasure.

Mike is an extremely helpful, very interesting guy with a wealth of experience far removed from that of many people. His place is somewhat rustic, very clean, safe and quiet. It is not the Dallas Marriott, but in our opinion, 100 times better. We will make staying at El Porton Verde an essential element of our arrival and departure from Managua on every future trip.

Please ask Mike for my contact information if you would like any further details regarding our experience and expectations about El Porton Verde. I’ll be happy to talk or email with you.

Room Tip: Book the best available room, book every service you might want or need. You will get more than you pay for!
Wow, I am both humble and proud that our guests continue to provide such great reviews for Farmstay El Porton Verde! John and his lovely partner were a delight to host, very interesting people as he is a pilot and she is a well-known casting director in the movie business. From my place, they went on to stay at Rancho Santana. Super nice folks and I really hope to get to see them again. What a wonderful life where I get to meet such interesting people. I am truly blessed, and just around the time of Thanksgiving! 🙂

Super-excited to see JC from Madrid give the Farmstay an excellent review on TripAdvisor. JC was here to teach Reiki, both to the general public and to health practitioners here in Managua, He had a very successful trip, and brought his daughter along for some great bonding moments.

It is always a thrill to see quality family time as only Nicaragua can provide. Imagine your children learning about real play, not being tethered to the electronic device du jour, but having the opportunity to see how people live quite happily without the material goods that are so prevalent in other parts of the world. Not to say that people here do not have the tablets, smartphones, etc. but certainly a much smaller percentage do have such things.

So, yes, I am happy to get a good review. Why? Well, I got a lousy one a few months ago (my first negative review), and frankly I was a bit upset about it. On TripAdvisor, the property owners can give a response to any review, good or bad, so I did that, but wish I had done a more thorough job of refuting or at least attempting to explain each and every issue that these guests had with their visit to the farmstay.

So, now I have at least two really nice reviews that are the first ones folks see, and the lousy one is down the list a bit. But most guests who actually read the reviews on TripAdvisor understand that there are circumstances we can control, and ones we cannot control. Plus, 24 good reviews for every one that is not so good is a ratio I can live with!

I have also had the privilege to host a few couple that run small inns & hotels, bed & breakfast, hostels, auberges, hospedajes, and other lodging types that, like Farmstay El Porton Verde, offer personalized service, local knowledge, and in general, the sort of experience that a hotel generally cannot replicate, (nor are they particularly interested in such things…)

So thanks again JC and yes, I am definitely looking forward to your visit in February!

“Best place in Managua!” (Another five-star Tripadvisor review!)

“Best place in Managua!”

Mike and Miranda were superb hosts and great company, the best we’ve stayed with on AirBnb (so good we stayed with them on our last nights). The farm is just south of Managua, out of the heat of the city and overlooks the Volcano Masaya. Upon arrival we were generously upgraded to their larger apartment which was was spacious and really well kitted out (all rooms are amazing). Breakfast was hearty with fresh fruit from their farm garden. The home-roasted coffee is a real treat. They were also incredibly helpful in terms of local information and giving us lifts to bus and taxi points so we could start our day. Incredible value for money given the room and the overall experience and service. (Mike also has a fascinating family history). Muchos gracias por todo Mike y Miranda!

Chris and Lisa

Well well, what a sweet review (*blushing*). These two, Chris and Lisa, were pretty wonderful guests! Thank you guys for the nice review, we really appreciate it!

It is so nice when we have return visitors, when they come back to us before they go back home it is so interesting to hear where they went and what they did when there. These two took some real adventures, well beyond the usual triangle of Granada, Ometepe, and San Juan del Sur.

Return visitors are great too in that we know each other already, they know what to expect, how to get around in our area, etc. so it is really more like greeting friends returning from a trip somewhere then anything else. We do pride ourselves on the number of return visitors we get.

If I recall correctly, Lisa and Chris went to San Carlos, all the way down the Rio San Juan de Nicaragua, spent the night with a Rama family in the jungle, etc. all quite the true adventurers! All without hardly any Spanish as well. Most impressive indeed!

Great hosts! Relaxing stay

Mike and Miranda were the best hosts! We were told to stay away from Managua from other travelers, claiming that there was nothing to see there. However, Mike prepared a short historical trip around the capital city that gave us great perspective on Nicaragua’s past and the direction it was heading in the future. We even hung out in a local spot where we were the only tourists! If you’re lucky, Miranda might make you a delicious frozen treat, made from nancite, a small yellow, delightfully pungent fruit. Our only regret is that we did not come during mango season…but that just means that we’ll have to come back to El Portón Verde! Thanks Mike and Miranda!

We are honored to have received another excellent five-star Tripadvisor review!

Pleasant Oasis on the edge of the City – Review of Farmstay El Porton Verde, Managua, Nicaragua – TripAdvisor

“Pleasant Oasis on the edge of the City”

Reviewed December 12, 2012

I stayed one night with a friend so we would be close to the Airport for our early mornng flight out. We were in one of the bunk bed rooms which are small but clean and have very comfortable beds. Mike met us at the bus station from Leon and as arranged took us on a tour to the Masaya Volcano, out for lunch and then to the market to do some shopping. The cost of the extra tour was very reasonable and Mike made sure that he was taking us where we wanted to go.

In the morning we had an early breakfast before leaving for the airport before 6:00 a.m. We were given a choice of what we wanted (American or Nicaraguan).

Driving up to the place from the highway you may wonder what you have got yourself into on the bumpy, narrow, dirt road but once you arrive you will be pleasantly surprised. The rooms and pool overlook the volcano and the view is great. You won’t realize you are on the edge of a large city.
